Joint Industry-Academia-Government session is held for the first time as an initial interactive opportunity for nurturing future collaboration between India and Japan.
Hyderabad, September 18, 2021: Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and IIT Hyderabad are co-hosting the fourth edition of the job fair “JAPAN DAY” on 24th and 25th of September. The event will be organized online same as last year due to COVID-19 and 13 Japanese companies, comprising of startups, SMEs, and large corporates are participating to promote their businesses/cutting-edge technologies to attract students from IIT Hyderabad.
This year, in response to last year event’s survey, which showed that more than half of the participating companies were interested in future collaborative research with IIT Hyderabad, an Industry-Academia-Government session is planned for Day 1. Although “JAPAN DAY” has stayed as an interactive opportunity between IIT Hyderabad and Japanese companies, the Day 1 event is expected to establish a long-lasting relationship between IIT Hyderabad laboratories and Japanese companies which might enable the companies to acquire ideal talent based on research collaborative projects.
JETRO has been conducting “JAPAN DAY” at IIT Hyderabad since 2018 based on a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on a Japan-India Digital Partnership, which was signed between the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, India. So far, 10 Japanese companies, mostly large corporations joined the event in 2018, subsequently 5 Japanese companies mainly startups joined in 2019. Last year, the first-ever online “JAPAN DAY”, we got an overwhelming response and the number of companies increased to 20. More than half were startups aiming to recruit Indian top talents to develop their technologies and products to compete in the global market.
Worldwide the IT sector continues to expand and the competition for acquiring human talents is ever-crescent. Japan, in particular, faces a shrinking population problem that makes it difficult for employers to fill critical posts, giving place to foreigners to step up and thrive in new multi-cultural working environments in Japan.
Expressing his delight on the occasion, Mr. Takashi Suzuki, Director General of JETRO Bengaluru, said, “Japanese business interest in India is steadily increasing even under the COVID-19 situation. India has one of the youngest populations in the world who are gifted at math and IT technology. Besides, they have effective communication skills and are open to cultural diversity. Japan should involve such mindsets so that we can be succeeded in global businesses.”
Extending his gratitude to all participating organizations, Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, said “The strong collaboration of IIT Hyderabad with Japan has made Japan one of the most preferred countries for our students to study or work abroad. JAPAN DAY, that is being organized regularly for the last 2 years at IIT Hyderabad, is a unique and important event that greatly helps our students to develop an understanding and confidence about the job, work culture, life, and carrier path in Japan. Many Japanese companies will also get exposure to the excellence and potential of IIT Hyderabad students through the active interaction with them on JAPAN DAY. I wish the fourth edition of JAPAN DAY a grand success, and I also wish success in the upcoming placement season for both IIT-H students and Japanese companies.”
Prof. Murty also emphasized “I thank JETRO and JICA for making this important event happen despite difficulties amid COVID-19. I also wish JAPAN DAY to be a part of the Indo-Japan collaboration ecosystem and to sustain it for the future.”
