FM University opens Odisha’s 1st Marine Bioresources and Biotechnology Centre

BHUBANESWAR: Fakir Mohan University Balasore on Saturday opened the Centre for Marine Bioresources and Biotechnology in its campus to promote teaching and research works on marine bioresources and marine biotechnology. The university claimed that it is the first of its kind centre in the state.

Attending the inaugural ceremony of the centre, Union minister of state for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying Pratap Chandra Sarangi said his government in the Centre is promoting a lot of activities in the marine and fisheries sector. “India has a great potential in the field of marine bioresources and can exploit marine fisheries, seaweeds, horseshoe crab and other living resources. Thus, my government will be extending all financial help in the fisheries sector,” he added.

Higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo urged the students to go beyond the textbooks and venture into new knowledge which will benefit the society and make the students self-sufficient to face the world in the future. While meeting students and faculty members of the university, Sahoo promised that all necessary help will be provided to this university. He also suggested setting up of a good convention centre in the university to accommodate more people during any event.

University vice-chancellor Dinabandhu Sahoo said Odisha’s long coastline is rich in various types of marine bioresources, which are not fully exploited due to lack of scientific exploration, trained manpower and high-end equipment. He said marine biotechnology has a great future and the centre will study the untapped bioresources of not only the Odisha coast but also the unique Chilika lake.

He also said that his university will start MSc in marine bioresources and biotechnology. It will also develop collaboration with national and international organizations in the field of marine bioresources and biotechnology.

Among others, Remuna MLA Sudhansu Sekhar Parida, Balasore Sadar MLA Swarup Kumar Das, students, teachers and staff of the university were present.
