Hyderabad, May 24, 2023: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared the Civil Service Examination 2022 results on May 23, 2023. 11.5 Lakh people appeared for UPSC 2022, of which only 933 qualified for the exam. Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is pleased to share that Ms Uma Harathi N, a BTech (2017) Graduate from the Department of Civil Engineering from IIT-Hyderabad (IITH), has bagged the AIR-3 position in UPSC 2022, followed by Mr Jayasimha Reddy Ravula (AIR-217), BTech-2019, Electrical Engineering, and Mr Bollam Umamaheshwar Reddy (AIR-270), BTech – 2016, Mechanical & Aerospace Engg. In the past also, many IITH graduates have made it to India’s most acclaimed competitive test, wherein learnt from various disciplines put their best efforts to get a chance to serve the country in different leadership roles. Every year during Alumni Day, IITH recognizes Alumni who significantly contribute to the nation’s growth by awarding Alumni Excellence Award for Nation-Building.
Expressing delight at the astounding success of Ms Uma, Mr Jayasimha & Mr Umamaheshwar, Prof B S Murty, Director, IITH, said, “IITH Alumni are doing well in almost every walk of life, including service to the nation. It is evident from Uma, Jay & Umameshwar’s dedication to serving the nation by cracking the country’s hardest and most coveted administrative service test – UPSC. Their perseverance will act as motivation for not only existing students of IITH but also for other youth in the country. Their securing flying colors in such a competitive exam despite all odds ascertains that when commitment is resilient, the destination is not far.”
Conveying congratulations to Ms Uma, Mr Jayasimha & Mr Umamaheshwar on this significant milestone, Dr Mudrika Khandelwal, Dean (Alumni & Corporate Relations), IITH, said, “We are very proud of our alumni who are shaping into committed and responsible individuals, ready to come out of their comfort zone to serve society and nation. Overwhelmed with the phenomenal performance of Ms Uma, Prof Umashankar B, Department of Civil Engineering and Uma’s Supervisor during the project at IITH, said, “Uma Harathi was interested in civil services from the beginning. She did very well in civil engineering subjects as well and even published her project research work at a conference.”
Enthralled by the remarkable performance of Ms Uma, Mr Umamaheshwar, & Mr Jayasimha, Prof Shiv Govind Singh, Head of the Department, Department of Electrical Engineering, IITH, said, “It is undoubtedly a moment of pride. Seeing our students doing exceptionally well in a field other than technology is sheer happiness. On behalf of the department, I would like to wish Jayasimha, Uma & Uma Maheshwar a great future ahead.”
Getting Nostalgic about Mr Umamaheshwar’s journey at IITH, Prof Ramji M, Head of the Department, Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, IITH, said, “I remember teaching a course to him. He was a composed and calm person in the class. The vibrant ecosystem of IITH definitely would have helped him to become a mature individual. I wish all the best for his future endeavours and wish him a great career ahead serving the nation.”
Cherishing moments at IITH & being relieved to prepare again for UPSC 2023, Ms Uma said, “It was no doubt a challenging journey being it is my fifth attempt. But I stuck to my strategy, and my motivation was finishing my daily and hourly targets. Finding balance is key – taking care of physical and mental health is equally important. I want to give three messages: 1. Try to find where you are going wrong, 2. Understand how to do it the right way, and 3. Practice”.
Attributing this accomplishment to the opportunities at IITH, Mr Jayasimha said, “Understanding oneself well, planning accordingly, and taking calculated risks help us stay ahead. The research paper with Dr Kotaro and the independent project undertaken at IITH were prominent discussion topics in the interview.”
Recalling how IITH was instrumental in this attainment, Mr Umamaheshwar said, “The peer group at IITH was definitely an added advantage. It helped to get solutions to problems in a better way. Academics at IITH for sure played a significant role in achieving this milestone. Being it is a highly competitive exam, hence have Plan-B.”
