Seoul: India has decided to take its partnership with South Korea to a new level. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday said India wants to expand strategic partnership with South Korea in new areas such as critical and emerging technologies, semiconductors and green hydrogen to make its bilateral relations more contemporary. Jaishankar said this while co-chairing the 10th India-South Korea Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) with his counterpart Cho Tae-yeul. There were fruitful discussions between the two sides on comprehensive cooperation in the fields of defence, science and technology and trade. It is believed that this deal between India and South Korea will cause great tension to Kim Jong Un.
“Today (Wednesday) co-chaired the 10th India-South Korea Joint Commission meeting with Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeul in Seoul, which was comprehensive and meaningful,” Jaishankar said in a post on ‘ He said that during the talks, expansion in bilateral relations, defence, science and technology, cooperation in trade, movement of people of the two countries and cultural cooperation were discussed. Jaishankar said, “There was also discussion on taking forward bilateral cooperation.” Views were also exchanged on the development of the Indo-Pacific region, our understanding of the challenges in the region, and regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Both countries together will do wonders in defense and technology
Jaishankar said in his address that bilateral relations had reached a new height during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to South Korea in 2015. The Foreign Minister said, “It is important that we maintain it.” We have become stronger over the years. We have indeed become important partners for each other and our bilateral exchanges, trade, investment, defense and science and technology cooperation have grown rapidly and we have maintained dynamism in the traditional areas of cooperation. He said, “We will now be interested in expanding into new areas like critical and emerging technologies, semiconductors, green hydrogen, human resource mobility, nuclear cooperation etc. to make our relations more contemporary.”
He said that both the countries have seen increasing similarity of views on international forums. He said, “It is important to focus on the Indo-Pacific region.” Jaishankar said that he has approached the Joint Commission with great optimism and hope. He said, “I know there is a good friendship between us. Our challenge is to translate this into practical results. (Language)
