Commissions ICT centres in Niger, Jigawa
Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, has said, in the quest for national development, the government must recognise the role of technology in advancing gender equity by offering women full participation in the digital revolution.
Mrs Tinubu made the suggestion while unveiling digital economy and e-learning facilities centre at Hill top Modern Secondary School, Minna, Niger State.
The centre was equipped by Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), to provide access to technology for women.
Represented by wife of the House of Representatives Speaker, Fatima Abbas, the President’s wife noted that the formal unveiling of the centre marked a strategic step forward in setting the path for Nigerian women to participate and strive in the digital revolution and to further demonstrate the commitment of Tinubu’s administration at ensuring equitable access opportunity across the country.
According to her, technology has become a positive tool in the world, shaping everything, from communication and commerce to education, as well as health care, adding that in the evolution of the digital economy, women must not be left behind.
The official unveiling and handing over of the digital economy centre was held simultaneously in Jigawa, Ebonyi, Cross River, Oyo, Bauchi and Niger states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
She said: “We can unlock the potential that would enable women to contribute meaningfully to economic growth, innovation and social progress towards the nation’s greater prosperity.”
Earlier, wife of Niger State Governor, Fatima Bago, had lauded Mrs Tinubu for her foresight of empowering women through digital revolution.
Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Titi Auta, the governor’s wife appreciated the gesture and assured that the centre would be utilised for the purpose it was meant for, adding, however, that the centre would, no doubt, make significant impact on the women, both old and young.
The Project Manager, Ismaila Abubakar, explained that establishment of the centre was in line with Mrs Tinubu’s vision of providing opportunities for women in the digital economy.
She stated that the centre was equipped with some sets of computers, e-learning facilities, inverter, solar panels and standby power generating set.
ALSO, the President’s wife, while commissioning and handing over North West Women Informational and Communication Technology (ICT) centres in Dutse, Jigawa State, vowed not to relent in its efforts in pursuing better opportunities and better lives for children and women in the country.
She said the ICT centres built across the six geopolitical zones and Abuja was aimed at providing more opportunities for digital capacity building for women and children to achieve inclusive economic development.
