Apple is reportedly planning to bring major design changes to the upcoming iPhone 16 series models, set for release in September of this year. After several leaks hinted at a vertical camera layout on the rear side (similar to the iPhone 12), a new report has revealed that the Cupertino-based tech giant is now working to maximize the display size on the upcoming iPhone 16 series by using a new ultra-thin bezel technology.
According to Sisa Journal, Apple is planning to use a technology called Border Reduction Structure (BRS) to make the bottom bezel of the iPhone screen smaller. This technology rolls up the internal wiring into a more compact form, as reported by MacRumors. Apple might use this borderless display technology in all four models of the iPhone 16, which are expected to come out in the second half of this year.
The company tried using this technology in iPhones before, but stopped because of problems with heat. Now, MacRumors claims that Apple is trying again due to recent improvements in heat dissipation technology. Last year, Apple made the borders on iPhone 15 Pro models smaller using a method called low-injection pressure over-molding, or LIPO. This made the border size on the display 1.5 millimeters, compared to about 2.2 millimeters on iPhone 14 models.
Apple hasn’t changed the sizes of iPhone screens much since the iPhone 12 came out in 2020. But things are going to be different with the 2024 iPhone 16 lineup. The iPhone 16 Pro models will have bigger screens than the current iPhone 15 Pro models.
According to the report, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have larger screens compared to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.27-inch screen (159.31 mm), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.85-inch screen (174.06 mm). Apple will likely market them as 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively
The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be larger than previous models, allowing for more internal space. This could lead to improvements such as larger batteries for longer usage times. However, base models like the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are not getting size changes this year, the report said.
