Arati Prabhakar, an engineer and social worker, played a key role in introducing the White House to the future possibilities of AI. In 2022, Arati was appointed by President Joe Biden as the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and Science Advisor. She is the first woman and immigrant to serve in this role, making history with her confirmation. As the OSTP Director, she plays a crucial role in advising the President on matters related to science, technology and innovation.

She recognises the immense potential of AI while also emphasising the need to manage its risks effectively. Under her leadership, the Biden administration has taken significant steps to address AI safety, privacy, and discrimination.

It all began in March 2023 when she demonstrated ChatGPT to President Joe Biden using a laptop in the Oval Office. Six months later, President Biden signed a landmark executive order that focuses on AI safety, security, privacy and innovation. The order establishes new standards of AI, protects against discrimination, and advances American leadership in AI globally. Today, Prabhakar serves as the director, collaborating closely with the President to the chart the course for AI development. Her expertise has been instrumental in shaping this comprehensive strategy.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

Born and bought up in Delhi, Arati moved to United States at the age of 3. Growing up in Lubbock, Texas, as she was encouraged to pursue STEM fields early on. Prabhakar earned a degree in electrical engineering and later completed her Ph.D. in applied physics. In 1984, she made history as the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in applied physics from the California Institute of Technology. Following her doctoral studies, she embarked on a congressional fellowship in Washington, D.C, with the Office of Technology Assessment from 1984 to 1986.

In 2023, Prabhakar drew attention when she advocated for AI collaboration with India. During discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Biden, she emphasised the importance of ensuring safe technology for the benefit of all citizens.

Arati Prabhakar’s work exemplifies the intersection of science, policy and innovation. Her contributions continue to shape future of technology and its impact on society.
