Tata Power-DDL signs MoU with ISGF for new V2G technology demonstration in North Delhi

New Delhi: Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) has partnered with the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) to deploy a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology demonstration project in North Delhi. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on May 15, 2024, marking a significant step in integrating electric vehicles (EVs) with the power grid to enhance grid stability and EV utility.

The agreement was signed by Gajanan S. Kale, Chief Executive Officer, Tata Power-DDL, and Reji Kumar Pillai, President, India Smart Grid Forum. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Praveen Agrawal, Chief HR & IR, Tata Power-DDL; Reena Suri, Executive Director, India Smart Grid Forum; and Vivek Kumar, Manager of Technical Services, India Smart Grid Forum.

“We are thrilled to join hands with India Smart Grid Forum on this innovative project. The initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and fostering a future-ready grid. The project holds immense potential to revolutionize the way we manage our power grids and integrate EVs seamlessly,” said Gajanan S. Kale, CEO, Tata Power-DDL.

The V2G project will explore the potential of EVs to support the grid during peak and off-peak hours by enabling bi-directional energy transactions. This includes providing essential grid services like frequency and voltage support, testing the viability of EVs as backup power sources during outages, and examining the impacts of bi-directional charging.

“This collaboration with Tata Power-DDL is a crucial step towards integrating EVs into the smart grid ecosystem. The project will not only showcase the technical capabilities of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) but also explore its commercial viability, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future,” said Reji Kumar Pillai, President, India Smart Grid Forum.

The project is observed by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission, Central Electricity Authority, and Tata Motors, with the V2G technology partner being the University of Delaware, USA. “We are aligning different stakeholders in the project so that V2G compliant EVs will be launched in India soon as well as supporting regulations are also issued,” added Pillai.

This initiative is part of Tata Power-DDL’s broader strategy to integrate advanced technological solutions that support the development of a sustainable energy ecosystem.
