The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) – Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and its various institutes situated pan India has been actively promoting cleanliness and sanitation through various initiatives. Specifically, working on integrating citizens with the spirit of “Swachhata” (cleanliness) during the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign 4.0.  It’s heartening to see efforts aimed at cleanliness and community engagement.

Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign, the Swachhata drive was taken up by ICAR and its various institutes at the various schools and to find out the most unique and inspiring initiatives to integrate school children with cleanliness and environmental awareness.

The team of experts from ICAR-CIPHET, Ludhiana, found a unique and inspiring initiative at the crossing of the BRS Nagar flyover and bridge over a canal for Creative Upcycling of school children. The use of scrap materials, especially discarded tires and plastic bottles, for beautification is ingenious. Not only does it prevent waste from ending up in the canal, but it also transforms an otherwise mundane space into something visually appealing. Imagine how colourful and vibrant those flowers and ornamental plants must look against the backdrop of the bridge and flyover.

Additionally, Swachhata Hi Seva Mela was also initiated during the campaign. Events like the Swachhata Hi Seva Mela provide a platform for students to showcase their creativity and passion for cleanliness. Painting competitions, in particular, allow them to express their ideas and perspectives. Plus, it’s a fun way to spread awareness and encourage others to join the movement. 550 students from different schools for different competitions was participated in the event.

Overall, this initiative aligns perfectly with the Swachh Bharat Mission’s goals. It’s not just about cleaning up; it’s about creating a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful environment for everyone. Kudos to the team at ICAR-CIPHET and all the students who participated!
