Hyderabad, India: Diwali celebrations come with the vibrant display of fireworks, but Dr Sandeep Dachuri, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon at KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospital, Begumpet warns of the hearing risks associated with the high-decibel noise of firecrackers. “Hearing loss due to noise exposure is increasingly common, especially during Diwali, and affects younger adults more often than age-related hearing loss,” Dr Sandeep Dachuri stated.
The loud explosions from firecrackers, often reaching 100 to 130 decibels, can impact hearing health, particularly in those aged 16-40. “Our ears can safely tolerate sounds up to 80 decibels. When noise exceeds this, it can damage the cochlea, a critical part of the inner ear, potentially causing permanent hearing damage,” explained Dr Sandeep Dachuri.
He further emphasized that other loud sounds, such as those from headphones, earphones, DJs, and loud music in entertainment venues, contribute to hearing issues. Dr Sandeep Dachuri noted that in some cases, repeated exposure to these high-decibel sounds can even lead to permanent deafness.
On the occasion of Diwali, Dr Sandeep Dachuri recommends caution while using fireworks and suggests an audiometry test for anyone experiencing hearing issues. While treatment is available, regaining lost hearing remains challenging.
