LG’s new UltraFine 6K monitor looks like Apple’s Pro Display XDR – but better

This week at CES 2025, LG revealed its new UltraFine 6K Display, a professional-grade monitor that resembles Apple’s Pro Display XDR but comes with a few advantages.

For starters, the LG UltraFine is the first 6K monitor to use Thunderbolt 5 ports. Apple incorporated the new connectivity standard last year in the M4 MacBook Pro and Mac mini, but its Pro Display XDR is over five years old, after all, and limited to Thunderbolt 3.

What does this mean for performance? Thunderbolt 5 has double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, meaning it can support 80Gbps with no problem. With the help of Intel’s Bandwidth Boost mode, Thunderbolt 5 should be able to reach up to 120Hz on a 6K display. But we’ll have to wait and test the LG at the lab to confirm that.

Another advantage, it’s fairly safe to say, is that the UltraFine 6K won’t cost up to $6,000 like the Pro XDR. Unfortunately, LG hasn’t released pricing details about its new monitor yet, and it’s saving a few other specs for future announcements (like its ceiling refresh rate and availability). Given that other 6K monitors go for $2,500 to $3,000, we can expect a similar price range.

What we do know is that the display is not an OLED or mini-LED monitor, which should also mitigate some costs. Instead, the UltraFine 6K has a “Nano IPS Black” panel that purportedly delivers “exceptional color accuracy and a high contrast with a wide color gamut covering 99.5% of Adobe RGB and 98% of DCI-P3,” according to LG.

The previous iteration of an LG UltraFine monitor was its 4K Display (24MD4KL-B) which also debuted over five years ago. Compared with its predecessor, the UltraFine 6K has adopted a slimmer, more Apple-like aesthetic, including a nearly invisible bezel. With a model identifier of 32U990A, and based on older LG model numbers, we can only deduce that it’s a 32-inch display.

Stay tuned for more details and a comprehensive review once we get our hands on a model for testing.
