ENID, Okla. — Autry Technology Center welding student John Pethoud has secured a spot in the 2024 National Welding League Championship, hosted by Project MFG.
Pethoud placed in the top 18 in competition against students from more than 100 schools across the nation.
“It feels pretty cool to be in the top 18 in the nation,” Pethoud said. “Saying you are top 18 in the nation, that doesn’t really sink in because the mindset that I have is it doesn’t really matter how well I do, I’m doing it for the glory of God and He’ll be happy with me no matter what.”
The National Welding League Championship is scheduled for June 11-14, 2024, in Williamsport, Pa. Pethoud will demonstrate his expertise, innovation and precision in various welding challenges, representing Autry Tech on a national platform.
“We are immensely proud of John’s achievement and anticipate his performance at the National Welding League Championship,” said Dwight R. Hughes, Autry Tech superintendent/CEO. “His dedication and passion for welding exemplify the excellence we strive for at Autry Tech. We have full confidence in his ability to represent our institution well.”
This accomplishment also reflects on the education provided by Autry Tech’s welding program, led by instructors like Ryland Stonehocker, Hughes said.
“John’s hard work and determination have truly paid off, and we are confident that he will make Autry Tech proud,” Stonehocker said.
“I know I’m going to meet a lot of cool people in the welding industry, especially at my age, about to go off and go to college, start a welding job somewhere,” Pethoud said. “Having those connections can save you a lot of time working through the grunt work.”
