Connected Infotainment Rapidly Expanding into Motorbikes and Scooters, With Annual Connected Shipments Set to Reach 5 Million by 2030

Connected infotainment and telematics services are set to quickly expand beyond passenger vehicles and into smaller, two-wheel vehicle form factors, greatly expanding the addressable market for today’s suppliers of automotive infotainment and telematics technologies. While the adoption of connected services and infotainment in passenger vehicles begins to saturate key markets, penetration of connected infotainment in motorbikes and scooters currently sits at 4%, representing the potential for long-term growth for infotainment suppliers capable of addressing these smaller vehicle form factors. According to a new report from global technology intelligence firm ABI Research, connected motorbike and scooter annual shipments will reach 5 million by 2030.

“The market for two-wheel connected infotainment is nascent but set for significant growth, particularly in APAC and in urban population centers, which are the natural home of the two-wheel vehicle form factor,” says James Hodgson, Research Director at ABI Research. “Customization of existing infotainment offerings for riders in these markets will be the critical step to ramping up adoption of connected two-wheelers.”

Two-wheeled vehicle form factors are segmented into various price points and address multiple use cases. Some regions are skewed toward high-performance leisure applications, while in others, the two-wheeler is the dominant form factor underpinning personal mobility. Over 53.5 million powered two-wheelers shipped in the APAC market in 2022, and the region is expected to account for 87% of the connected two-wheeler market by 2030.

The growing momentum behind the two-wheeler connectivity can be seen in the recent launch of multiple products from long-standing suppliers of automotive infotainment technologies. At IAA 2023, Qualcomm announced the expansion of their Snapdragon Digital Chassis to support the rollout of location services and infotainment experiences in two-wheel vehicle classes in coordination with long-standing established automotive Tier 1 suppliers such as Bosch and Valeo. In October 2023, NXP launched its reference platform for two-wheeler digital clusters to accelerate the development of digital experiences in two-wheeled vehicles, offering solutions that meet the specific needs of two-wheelers concerning cost and support for integration of multiple peripherals such as helmets via Bluetooth.

“For hundreds of millions of people, the two-wheeler is the primary mode of transportation, but these vehicles have yet to benefit from the improvements in safety and convenience that connected services can bring to the same degree as passenger vehicles,” Hodgson concludes. “Suppliers of connected infotainment technologies now have the potential to duplicate the same growth that they have enjoyed in the four-wheel space while also increasing their exposure and experience in the APAC market.”

These findings are from ABI Research’s Connected Services and Infotainment in Two-Wheel Vehicles application analysis report.
