Software is no longer the future of technology

For a generation, “tech” has been synonymous with “code.” That’s changing, with investments in robots, gene therapies — and, yes, AI.

As our CEO Chris Wink wrote, the last few years saw a focus on putting funds toward building physical things, like semiconductor chips and robots. Of course, software is involved, it’s just baked into the process — like the telephone.

AI is a kind of software, Wink said, but just about everyone is betting on it marking a new stage. Opportunities and limits with AI rely on chips and energy storage. In other words, that’s physical technology.

News Incubator: What else to know today

• DXC Technologies, based in Ashburn, is partnering with Microsoft and a Dutch transportation infrastructure firm to build a generative AI tool. [Washington Biz Journal]

• The CIA’s first chief technology officer is leading the agency’s incorporation of generative AI. Nand Mulchandani, who has been in the role since 2022, spoke about the progress. [Associated Press]
