Global automobile companies are ramping up their investments in electric vehicle (EV) production, and as a result, social media conversations around EVs are on the rise. Over the last 12 months (April 2022 – March 2023), these discussions have increased by 25% compared to the previous year. Against this backdrop, GlobalData’s Social Media Analytics platform has revealed a list of the top 10 companies that were most talked about in EV-related discussions during the last year.
Tesla Inc maintained its top position in EV-related discussions in the last year followed by Ford Motor Company, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW), General Motors Company, Honda Motor Company, Hyundai Motor Company, Porsche, Kia Motors Corporation, and Rivian Automotive.
Smitarani Tripathy, Social Media Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Tesla was the most discussed automobile company with a 43% share during the last one year. The conversations on Tesla spiked the most in October 2022, when Tesla forecasted jump in global sales in Q4 2022 and through 2023. Social media contributors discussed how Tesla is pushing its production plan in the new factories of Austin and Berlin to increase global production of its top-selling Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles.”
Ford contributed 13% share of voice among top 10 companies in EV discussions and emerged as the next most mentioned automobile company. The highest peak in influencers discussions was noticed for Ford, when the company said that it plans to cut about 4,000 jobs in the manufacturing units in Europe as part of a drive to speed up its transition from petrol and diesel engines to electric vehicles.
Rivian saw highest growth in EV discussions among the top 10 companies with more than 100% rise over last one year. The company saw highest spike in social media discussions during September 2022, when the company announced its strategic partnership with Mercedes‑Benz Vans for electric vans production.
Tripathy concludes: “’Lithium’ was among the most discussed trend related to EV during the last year, among social media contributors. Increasing EV penetration in the automotive industry is driving the demand for Lithium, meanwhile, the EV leaders such as Tesla have come forward with plans to build its own lithium refinery in a race to secure the supply of key raw material for the EV batteries.”
