Google will talk about Wear OS 5 during Google I/O

We’re now experiencing one of the biggest tech slumps of the year. We’re in between Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked events. Also, WWDC, Apple’s hardware event and Google’s hardware event are months away. However, one thing to break up the monotony is Google I/O. According to a new report, Google just confirmed that Wear OS 5 will launch later this year.

Talk about a comeback story! For a few years, we thought that Google had completely given up on the OS. However, in 2021, the company hit us with the news that it had retaken an interest in its wearable platform and started delivering more consistent updates.

Currently, we are on Wear OS 4, and it’s powering devices such as the OnePlus Watch 2. This is a device that is, in many ways, a big improvement over the first generation. It has an extremely long battery life, a beautiful design, and much more functionality compared to its predecessor. Google confirmed that Wear OS 5 is coming out later this year

Currently, Google unveiled the session list for Google I/O 2024. Within the list, Google revealed that it’s going to talk about the next generation of its wearable platform. On the page, it reads “In this talk, we’ll discover the new features of Wear OS 5. This includes advances in the Watch Face Format, and how to design and build for the increasing range of device sizes.”

Other than that, we’re not sure what else the company will talk about. When it comes to updates to Wear OS, we don’t hear a lot of groundbreaking news. However, the important thing is that Google is paying more attention to the platform. Wear OS 2 existed for years before Google brought forth Wear OS 3, and there was no telling if the company quietly axed it.

So, even if this is an iterative update, it’s still good to know that Google is still going at it.

When is Google I/O?

Google I/O will happen on May 14th, 1:00 p.m. EST (10:00 a.m. PST). There will be two live keynotes. The first one is the Google keynote, and the second one is the Developer keynote. Along with those, there will be other Keynotes, but those will not be streamed live. Those will be recorded and released on May 16th.
