India is following other world leaders and placing focus on using solar energy for the production of hydrogen to fuel automobiles and other sectors in their economy. The recently announced partnership with a European firm comes on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a comprehensive “National Hydrogen Energy Mission.” Norway and India are also jointly moving towards this venture in the R&D space and are establishing a Centre of Excellence in Hydrogen.
Guyana’s strong historical relationship with India and Norway provides a great opportunity to possibly participate in this venture. Allowing for an expansion and shift in our energy portfolio that keeps us at the forefront of renewable energy development. Considering the speed at which technology changes in the energy space are occurring, it may be best to also participate in other key R&D initiatives that may require us to adjust to technology which impacts/reshapes the power grid and energy distribution network. In the event that our resources do not permit for such a level of involvement, the Ministry with responsibility for the energy sector portfolio should consider developing a business intelligence unit to allow for a fast follower approach. This will ensure that our developmental initiatives remain current and our infrastructure can accommodate the technology of tomorrow while also leveraging the newest forms of sustainable energy.
