New Delhi: Over the past 20 years, significant progress has been made in the fight against malaria. Efforts have been made from across the world that have successfully reduced the cases of malaria and mortality globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 2000 and 2019, the malaria incidence rate reduced by 29 per cent globally, and malaria-related deaths decreased by 60 per cent. This progress can be linked to multiple factors, such as increased funding for malaria control programs, widespread distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets, improved access to diagnostic testing and antimalarial treatment, and the development of effective malaria vaccines.

Dr Ravi N Sangapur, MD (Internal Medicine), Consultant Physician, HCG Suchirayu Hospital, Hubli told News9, “Indoor residual spraying is another important preventive measure, involving the application of insecticides to the interior walls of houses to kill mosquitoes. Additionally, community-based interventions such as environmental management, which focuses on reducing mosquito breeding sites, can significantly contribute to malaria prevention. Targeted use of antimalarial drugs, such as preventive treatment for pregnant women and vulnerable populations in high-risk areas, is also crucial.”
Multifaceted Approach to Malaria Prevention
Increasing Funding: To sustain and expand malaria control efforts, increased funding is essential. Governments, international organisations, and donors should prioritize adequate funding for research, prevention, surveillance, and treatment programs. Innovative financing mechanisms, public-private partnerships, and collaboration with non-governmental organizations can help mobilise resources effectively.
Embracing Technology: Leveraging technological advancements can revolutionize malaria control efforts. Mobile applications for early diagnosis, electronic surveillance systems, and remote monitoring tools can enhance access, data collection, and monitoring of malaria cases. Additionally, using drones for the distribution of bed nets and essential medications in remote areas can overcome geographical barriers.
Community Engagement and Education: Engaging with local communities and empowering them to take ownership of malaria control initiatives is vital. Community health workers can play a crucial role in raising awareness, conducting screenings, and providing education on prevention and treatment. Tailoring interventions to address cultural beliefs and practices will contribute to improved acceptance and adherence to malaria control measures.
