“I’m excited to announce that today I’m joining @Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI. I’ll be leading all consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing and Edge,” Mustafa Suleyman shares on X.
Microsoft announced on Tuesday that Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of Google’s DeepMind, is the CEO of its newly created AI division. He is leading all consumer AI products such as Copilot, Bing, and Edge apart from serving as the vice president of Microsoft AI. He will look after the integration of AI Copilot into Windows and also with the Bing search engine.
Suleyman was born in 1984 to a Syrian-born taxi driver and an English nurse in the National Health Service (NHS). He has two younger siblings. He grew up in London and at the age of 19, he joined Mansfield College at Oxford University to learn Philosophy and Theology but dropped out in the second year. Then he started a charitable service named, the Muslim Youth Helpline, a UK charitable society that worked for the elevation of cultural growth among sensitive youth. He also worked on social problems and conflict resolution at the United Nations (UN), the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature and with the Dutch Government.
He founded DeepMind in 2010 with Shane Legg and Demis Hassabis, and later Google acquired it — a key milestone in his career. During this period, he served as the vice president of AI products and AI policy. In 2022, with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman he founded Inflection AI. The tech progression increases their funds and attention in the AI world.
In 2022 he left Google and founded Inflection AI. Inflection developed the prominent AI Chatbot Pi. Microsoft, Nvidia, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, and Eric Schmidt all invested in the company. The company raised $1.3 billion in funding.
He published The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century’s Greatest Dilemma, which was the New York Times and Sunday Times best-selling book.
The co-founder of Inflection and its chief scientist, Karen Simonyan will also join the Nadella-led company. Nadella wrote “Several members of the Inflection team have chosen to join Mustafa and Karén at Microsoft. They include some of the most accomplished AI engineers, researchers, and builders in the world. They have designed, led, launched, and co-authored many of the most important contributions in advancing AI over the last five years. I am excited for them to contribute their knowledge, talent, and expertise to our consumer AI research and product making.”
