Microsoft Ordered To Pay USD 242 Million to IPA Technologies for Cortana Patent Infringement

New Delhi, May 13: Microsoft, the tech giant, has been ordered to pay a sum of USD 242 million to IPA Technologies for infringing on a patent related to voice recognition technology. The ruling came from a federal jury in the US state of Delaware. IPA Technologies, a subsidiary of Wi-LAN, acquired the patent from SRI International’s Siri Inc. in 2010. Microsoft’s Cortana virtual assistant software was found to have violated this patent, leading to a financial penalty for Apple.

As per a report of Times of India, Microsoft’s clash with IPA Technologies over the Cortana patent infringement has resulted in a financial setback for the tech giantApple. The jury’s decision to award USD 242 million to IPA Technologies highlights the importance of patent disputes in the tech sector. Microsoft Likely To Launch Mobile Game Store in July; Check Details and Know What To Expect.

After a week-long trial, the decision went in favour of IPA and determined that Microsoft had breached IPA’s patent rights on its voice recognition technology for computer communication software. However, Microsoft argued that it did not infringe upon any of IPA’s patents. This case illustrates the complex legal battles that often emerge in intellectual property laws and technological advancements.

IPA is a subsidiary of Wi-LAN which is a reputable patent-licensing entity jointly held by Quarterhill, a Canadian tech company and two investment companies. The patent was acquired by IPA from SRI International’s Siri Inc., which developed the Siri virtual assistant technology that was bought by Apple in 2010. Microsoft discontinued its Cortana app for Windows 11, iOS and Android and also has subsequently ended support for Cortana in Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams Display and Microsoft Teams Rooms. Apple’s Next CEO: John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Likely To Replace Tim Cook; Check Other Potential Candidates.

It was in 2018 when IPA filed lawsuits against Microsoft alleging infringement of its personal digital assistant’s patents as well as those relating to voice-based data navigation. Many different IPA patents were initially challenged, but later, they were cut down to focus on one specific IPA patent.
