The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on March 21 that it will be holding the “On-device AI Ultra-differential Challenge” launch ceremony at the Josun Palace Hotel in the Gangnam district of Seoul in collaboration with LG Electronics, Microsoft Korea, and Intel Korea. This event marks the beginning of an open innovation initiative in the on-device AI sector, with plans to recruit 10 startups for the project.
This initiative is a collaborative effort where LG Electronics, Microsoft Korea, and Intel Korea will support the development infrastructure, enabling startups to develop AI solutions that LG Electronics will then integrate into their next-generation laptops. The government will support the necessary expenses for this collaboration.
Minister Oh Young-ju of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups stated, “Collaboration between startups and large corporations can secure our country’s leadership in AI,” adding, “We will strengthen our support for the growth of AI startups and their global expansion.”
On-device AI refers to AI that operates on individual devices without the need for internet connectivity or cloud servers. With AI being integrated into various fields such as home appliances and robotics, global competition in on-device AI is intensifying.
There are three recruitment categories: On-Device AI for Computers, On-Device AI Applications, and Free Proposals. For the PC category, startups developing AI software related to security, entertainment, productivity, and hardware performance improvements are being sought. In the applications category, companies developing lightweight and optimized AI models will be selected. For the free proposals category, participants can propose various solutions utilizing on-device AI, including new devices, AI PC accessories, and kiosks.
Startups within 10 years of establishment are eligible to apply. The selected 10 companies will conduct a Proof of Concept (PoC) with LG Electronics from May to September. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups will provide up to 20 million won in collaboration support funds. Microsoft will offer up to $150,000 in development credits (program fees), and Intel will provide support with its AI chipsets.
Solutions that achieve excellent results will be integrated into LG Electronics’ Gram laptops in the future. The aim is not just to conduct simple PoCs but to achieve actual sales results and open innovation outcomes.
