At the outset of the pandemic, the mobile ecosystem demonstrated genuine leadership to keep vital lines of communication open. Two years later, as we learn to live with the virus, it is time for the industry to come together and collectively build a vision for a connected recovery.
Earlier this week, the GSMA made an informed statement confirming our intention to hold MWC22 Barcelona as planned. This moment demands responsible leadership. That means making difficult decisions and responding to everchanging circumstances, listening, and taking appropriate actions to protect and promote every member of this ecosystem.
Given the lengths that so many partners, large and small, have taken to reconvene and make MWC22 Barcelona a success, we remain on course to host the industry at Fira Gran Via on 28 February – 3 March. We do this with overwhelming support from the industry, our partners, Spain, Catalonia, Barcelona, and the Host City Parties. In fact, earlier this week, the first deputy mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni confirmed the city’s “political, institutional and operational” support for MWC22 Barcelona.
We anticipate much speculation in the lead-up. Covid is a real concern, and unfortunately, in an environment with varied opinions and predictions about the near- and long-term impact, some exhibitors and attendees will be re-evaluating their plans for the event this year. Every year, we look forward to seeing our community come together, so we would be disappointed to miss any of you but understand and respect the decisions of our partners. The health and safety of staff, workers, exhibitors, visitors, suppliers, partners, and the local community remain our top priority. With three successful events in 2021, we have proven our ability to deliver a safe environment founded on our industry-leading health and safety plan, Committed Community.
This moment is our collective opportunity to showcase how the entire digital ecosystem continues to transform lives and significantly support global recovery with technology visionaries – against a backdrop of international recognition that connectivity has never been more critical.
