Redesigned Mercedes-Benz G-Class Debuts With Big Tech Improvements

While the SUVS of today look very different from those of 30 or 40 years ago, one model has completely bucked the trend. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class continues to be a hot commodity despite, or maybe because of, its iconic boxy body.

The new-generation 2025 Mercedes G-Class takes the hallmarks of its original 1979 design and amplifies them for the new era of electrification, technology and luxury.

A new grille, fresh front bumper and more tilted A-pillar are the biggest exterior aesthetic changes to the model. Twilight Blue Metallic paint, a Mercedes fan favorite, will be offered on the model for the first time. Buyers can opt for wheels in sizes from 19 to 22 inches.

Mercedes has filled out the G family with a powertrain flavor for everyone. Its G 550 is powered by mild-hybrid energy and designed to maximize fuel efficiency. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 gets its oomph from a 577-horsepower V8 combined with an electric generator. A new, all-electric G-Class model will also come to market.

Upmarket versions of the SUV have enhanced stability support to ensure the top-heavy G stays planted on the road or trail, even under extreme acceleration. Mercedes has engineered the G 550 to climb up a 100 percent grade, ford up to 27.6 inches of water and be stable on slopes of up to 35 degrees.

Like other off-roaders, the G-Class now comes with camera and screen technology that allows drivers to see the vehicle from all sides on the trails while monitoring key data on screen. The Transparent Hood feature uses cameras to allow a driver to see under the body of their vehicle to better navigate the terrain ahead.

G-Class also gets the latest generation MBUX infotainment operating system and a Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos, technology that provides an immersive and clear sound experience.

Luxury checklist items include climate-controlled cup holders, a wireless smartphone charger and a rear seat entertainment system. Expanded safety and driver assistance technology features will be offered on the new G-Class.

Buyers wishing to further customize their G can shop from the Manufaktur range, which allows further personalization than can be found on a standard model. The new G-Class goes on sale later this year.
