I’ve been testing out the 2023 edition of the Fire HD 10 tablet, a robustly made device with a bargain price. It usually costs from €179 but currently has 30 percent off the price.
As with all Amazon tablets, Fire HD 10 places an emphasis on the company’s own software, services and app store, and it’s an excellent way to browse the internet or stream music, movies and TV shows.

Fire HD 10 key features
Amazon tablets run the firm’s Fire OS which is based on Android but uses its own app store and has no access to the Google Play Store. This means you can’t use Google products such as Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Calendar except through a web browser. But Microsoft apps such as Office and OneNote are available.
This isn’t a machine built for working on, however, so the apps you will be looking for are the likes of NOW, Disney+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, all of which are present and correct. But do note there is no official YouTube app.
Under the hood is an octa-core 2Ghz processor, 3GB of memory and the option of 32GB or 64GB of storage. You can add a microSD card to the tablet to boost storage up to 1TB.
Alexa is built into the operating system. This means you can use the tablet as a portable smart display or a mobile Echo Show. You can request weather updates, control a smart plug or other smart home devices, adjust the temperature or view a live stream from a Ring security camera.
It’s also great as an e-reader if you use it in landscape orientation. The firm’s Kindle app delivers a traditional book-style layout, showing you two pages instead of one. If you buy one of these tablets, incidentally, you get a three-month Kindle Unlimited subscription for free.
You view all your content on what is a decent full-HD 10.1in screen. The tablet is thin and light, with rounded corners and a matte plastic rear. The speakers are sufficient, but you have the option of connecting external speakers or headphones using Bluetooth – or you can use the wired 3.5mm headphone port.
Fire HD 10 other features
It’s a handy machine for video calls on apps such as Zoom. There are 5MP cameras on the front and rear.
Battery life is one of the big plus points – Fire HD 10 matches the 10 hours of continuous use you will get from an iPad.
Recharging takes four hours using the 9w charger in the box, but the tablet does support wired recharging at up to 15w.
There is support for an Amazon keyboard and stylus which you need to buy separately.
