New Delhi, May 24 (CNA) A Taiwanese woman in her 40s died of COVID-19 in India on Sunday, the second Taiwanese national to die of the disease in the South Asian country since the pandemic began.
The woman, her husband and child had all been infected with COVID-19 and received treatment in a hospital, but later returned home, according to a source who requested anonymity.
Their conditions improved after being discharged, and the woman only had a slight cough on Sunday morning. In the afternoon, however, she began to experience shortness of breath and she died after being sent to the hospital, the source said.
The family lives in the state of Gujarat, where the husband works as a manager of the Indian branch of a Taiwanese company that produces industrial gases and chemicals, according to the source.
Taiwan’s top envoy to India Baushuan Ger (葛葆萱) told CNA that his office had learned of the matter and will do its best to help the family arrange the funeral.
The first Taiwanese to die of COVID-19 in India was a 49-year-old manager of a technology company based in the Indian city of Gurugram. He passed away on May 1.
Daily COVID-19 cases in India began to surge in early April and the country reported 400,000 new cases a day at its peak. New cases have since fallen to around 200,000 a day.
The number of COVID-19-related deaths continues to climb, however. The country’s death toll passed 300,000 on Monday, after 4,454 were confirmed in the past 24 hours.
