Semiconductors: the United States plans to triple its domestic production by 2032

Paris— Symbolized by the shutdown of automobile factories, the semiconductor shortage of the early 2020s encouraged the establishment of public incentives aimed at the construction of new capacities around the world. To what extent are these “Chips Act” bearing fruit?

In their new report ” Emerging Resilience in the Semiconductor Supply Chain “, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), anticipate the resurgence of the United States in the global supply chain of semiconductors. Here are the main lessons:

By 2032, the United States will triple its domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity compared to 2022.

  • The forecast growth (+203% in volume) is the largest in the world for the period 2022-2032 . It contrasts sharply with the 11% increase over the previous decade (2012-2022) which placed the United States last among major chip-producing regions. Europe will see its production capacity increase by 124% over the same period.
  • The United States’ share of global chip manufacturing capacity will increase from 10% in 2022 – at the time of passage of the CHIPS and Science Act – to 14% in 2032 , marking an unprecedented increase in the national footprint of United States in this market.
  • In the most advanced chip segment (below 10 nm), the United States will see its capacity grow to reach 28% of global capacity by 2032 , compared to 0% in 2022.
  • The United States is expected to capture more than a quarter (28%) of total global capital expenditure (CAPEX) between 2024 and 2032, placing it second behind Taiwan (31%).
