Suspension of Blue subscription service shows Musk’s Twitter gamble is not paying off, says GlobalData

Daniel Clarke, Analyst in Thematic Intelligence at GlobalData, comments:

“Musk’s cavalier management style has proved effective in industrial sectors, but social media requires more delicacy. User safety and content moderation underpin Twitter’s revenue streams, and Musk’s heavy-handed changes to staff and policies have caused chaos and seemingly enraged advertisers.

“Musk himself is either unaware of the ripple effects of his own tweets or does not care about their consequences. His management-by-tweet philosophy has already caused untold problems for Tesla and Space X, so it is hardly a surprise that adopting the same management style for Twitter is causing even more turmoil.”

Rachel Foster Jones, Thematic Analyst at GlobalData, offers her view:

“Following adjustments to Twitter’s verification features, the constant back and forth on product launches and policies gives the impression that Twitter is descending into anarchy.

“Fears regarding impersonation and misinformation may irreparably tarnish the platform’s integrity. Further, regulators will be keeping a close watch on procedings, so Twitter must prepare for an onslaught of regulatory scrutiny alongside an inevitable exodus of advertisers.

“Musk is now playing fast and loose with content moderation policies, while also laying off most of the team in charge. Given that Musk appears to make little effort to moderate his own tweets, one question is whether regulators will be able to trust his commitment to content moderation on the platform.”
