Turn your Instagram profile into digital business card – here’s how

Instagram has introduced several major changes and updates during the last couple of months — including new features and privacy protections.

Today, the social site announced profile cards: Users no longer need to type in handle names to find a mutual or new connection; now you can set up a profile card that makes you easily findable with a custom QR code.

Also: Facebook will show you more content from outside your friends list (but that might not be a bad thing)

The new feature is not unlike the way that digital payment apps, such as Venmo and Cash App, enable their users to share profiles. Instagram’s version is a two-sided profile card with one side for the scannable QR code and the other side featuring your IG handle, profile picture, short bio, and a song of your choice.

Instagram compares the new update to the digital version of a business card that you can design to house contact links and showcase your bio “in one sleek digital package.” It’s a great way to network and “make new connections,” Instagram added, and — by adding a favorite song — to attract new friends with similar interests.

Here’s how to customize your own IG profile card

  • Go to your profile and tap “Share Profile.” Your own profile card will show up automatically. (If it doesn’t show up, try again later, as the feature is rolling out globally.)
  • Click the pencil icon on the upper right corner to edit elements of your profile. Here is where you can update the information on your profile, add favorite music and contact/project links, and change the background image.
  • Share your profile card by using the share options below the card

This upgrade will be helpful for content creators, freelancers, and small businesses, but it’s not so obvious how it can be helpful for users who use Instagram as just a social media platform — other than further professionalizing casual interactions. Ultimately, this speaks to how many social media platforms are encouraging users to develop their personal brands.
