The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Active Jobs Index in the US fell by 18.6% month-on-month in October 2022. Companies closed 24% more jobs than new postings. On the other hand, the Non-STEM Active Jobs Index in the US declined by 9%, reveals GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
According to an analysis of GlobalData Job Analytics Database, software and web developers, programmers, and testers had a 24% share of the total STEM jobs in October, followed by computer and information systems managers (11%). Apart from technology, other industries such as construction, banking and payments, and aerospace defense, and security were also looking for STEM jobs.
Srinivas Rahul, Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Even though the STEM jobs that are open for application are high compared to the pre-COVID-19 levels, this is a substantial fall compared to September 2022. It became clear that several junior or entry-level positions with less than two years of work experience were being sought after by employers, indicating a preference for college graduates.”
In the construction industry, Honeywell International is hiring a ‘Sr Data Architect’ with canonical modelling experience. Black & Veatch’s ‘Data Architect Sr Analyst’ role is responsible for maintaining a business intelligence and analytics environment, and KBR Inc’s role for a ‘Cloud Data Engineer’ is responsible for building and maintaining the systems and structures that store, extract, and organize data for a cloud-based, Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) asset management analytics product.
In the banking and payments industry, US Bank Inc’s ‘Software Engineer Director’ role is for its digital enterprise initiatives. Aerospace and defense firm Raytheon Technologies’ is hiring a ‘Principal CNO Developer’ to design custom software tools and techniques on windows or linux platforms, while Northrop Grumman’s ‘Staff Engineer Embedded Software’ role is to help identify technical risks and report status within agile program activities.
Rahul concludes: “The trending roles in October 2022 include ‘developer’ and ‘software engineer’, with technology companies like UST Global and Cognizant looking to develop and improve new or existing products, refining AI and other analytic products. There were around 15 job postings for newly created roles for software web developer, computer and information system managers, and network administrators, all of which are relevant to STEM occupations.”
