Volvo’s New EVs Charge Tech Promises 30% Faster Charging Times

Volvo is set to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging with a breakthrough technology that promises a 30% faster charging time, addressing a key concern in the transition to electric mobility. Developed in collaboration with Breathe Battery Technologies and backed by The Volvo Cars Tech Fund, this innovation introduces an algorithm-managed adaptive charging system.

This system optimizes charging rates while safeguarding battery health, crucially avoiding issues like lithium plating that could diminish battery capacity over time. By dynamically balancing charge levels and rates, Volvo aims to maximize the efficiency of rapid charging, enabling EVs to go from 10% to 80% charge notably quicker.

A notable aspect of this advancement is its compatibility with existing Volvo batteries, requiring no redesign or additional materials, which aligns with the company’s environmental commitments. The scalability of the technology ensures a great integration into Volvo’s current production methods, minimizing any potential impact on the company’s carbon footprint.

However, current Volvo EV owners may have to wait for the next generation of vehicles to benefit from this technology — Volvo has indicated that the new charging system will be implemented in its upcoming fully electric cars (likely indicating that existing models won’t receive the upgrade); Nonetheless, the company plans to transition its entire production line to electric vehicles by 2030, ensuring widespread adoption of this faster-charging technology shortly.
