Water Testing Laboratories

To make provision of potable tap water supply in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality and on regular & long-term basis to every rural household in the country including in Tamil Nadu by 2024, since August,2019, Government of India in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal.
Water being a state subject, planning, approval and implementation of drinking water supply schemes and setting up of drinking water quality testing laboratories, lies with State/UT governments. As such individual projects/ schemes for rural water supply and water testing laboratories are not approved at the Government of India level.
Under JJM, States/ UTs can utilize upto 2% of their annual allocation for taking up water quality monitoring & surveillance activities inter alia which includes setting up and strengthening of drinking water quality testing laboratories at different levels viz. State, District, sub-division and/or block level. As reported by States/UTs, as on date, there are 2,073 drinking water quality testing laboratories at different levels viz. State, District, sub-division and/ or block level in the country. State-wise details of drinking water quality testing laboratories is Annexed.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.
