LiDar technology is being used by NASA, as per Apple, for its next Mars landing. The same tech is found in iPhone 12 Pro. What it does is that it creates a depth map of wherever you are and helps in measuring objects, or with AR apps, it can show you how a new pair of shoes will fit. It also makes Portrait shots possible in the Night mode of the camera.
